Cemeteries and Sea Water

 Going off my last post, this evening was also filled with the unexpected.  Apparently one of the top ten most beautiful cemeteries is here in Punta Arenas (not sure who decided it but I wouldn’t argue with it) so we visited a beautiful cemetery.  We calculated how long people had been alive and how long ago they died.  

Then I decided to go on a walk before going to bed for a little alone time.  But the walk took me to the beach.  Where people were swimming!  In the Straits of Magellan!  So, kids gathered and yes, we jumped in!  We took the cold plunge!  

Swimming and cemeteries were never on my agenda today.  But here we are, at the end of the world, doing both.

Spanish classes, Surfing and Scorpion Stings

 We have landed in our current home base in Costa Rica!  We are settling in to life here.   We have a lovely home on a hill just 5 minutes walk to the beach.  I've got a golf (my favorite!) and the kids have gotten into a routine of Spanish classes, beach time, swimming, and school work.  There is a lot more down time than I imagined and probably way more iPad time than I would like, but we do the best we can. Spanish classes are going well and we have a wonderful teacher.   Both kids took surfing lesson and did amazing!  But it seems more like Everett's thing than Eloise's thing. Rapa Nui

The second part of our trip is Easter Island or known locally as Rapa Nui.  I have learned a lot about the Moai on the island.  We have had a wonderful tour guide Kava that has taught us so much about the island. Okay, he has taught me a lot. The kids have whined. And complained. And been miserable.  So, maybe in hindsight not the best place to take kids. More of an adult trip.   But, the truth is I am not sad we are here.  I feel so grateful to experience this island.  The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. They want to educate about their island. They are so proud of the island and it's history, which according to me is really interesting (it is super boring according to my kids).  I feel incredibly safe here.  I also felt incredibly safe in Eco Camp in Torres del Paine and in Punta Arenas.  I didn't quite know what to expect of Chile, but it has met and exceeded expectations.   Another great part of travel is tryi...

The Unexpected

 What I love about travel is the unexpected.  It's the kindness of a person that doesn't speak your language, the flight attendant that goes out of their way to give you extra goodies when you appear to be a wary traveler with two kids, it's when the tour guide slips you a stuffed penguin and says, "I have a problem, I've only got one stuffed penguin and a lot of kids" that makes this experience life altering.   Yes, seeing the Straits of Magellan, walking with penguins, seeing sea lions are great.  And you have to check those of your list, but I think it is the unexpected that makes travel so exhilarating.  Of course, not all of those things are great.  Sometimes the unexpected is bad.  Like when your overnight international flight says "cancelled" (it wasn't, but the board said it was) or you are told you are going to miss your connecting flight and they bump you, but you arrive at the gate with ample time (okay, not ample but like 10 minutes b...
